First Signal from Sharjah-Sat-1 Detected on January 17

At 10:02 am on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology (SAASST) of the University of Sharjah (UoS) successfully received the first communication signal from its first CubeSat, Sharjah-Sat-1, when it reached its orbit around the Earth.

'Sharjah-Sat-1' is the first miniaturized satellite launched by SAASST on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, as part of a series of CubeSats that UoS intends to launch in cooperation with several national institutions and organizations in the Emirate of Sharjah in the near future.

As soon as the CubeSat reached its orbit around Earth, the project engineers at SAASST were prepared to receive the first communication signal it would send once it reached its orbit around the planet. The signal clearly indicates the state of the satellite and its readiness to perform its mission after it was successfully deployed from the main spacecraft. As of now, Sharjah-Sat-1 is in a low Earth orbit, 550 km above the surface of the Earth. Therefore, the operation of the subsystem started gradually as the small satellite began its 90-minute orbit around Earth.

Once the CubeSat passes over the Emirate of Sharjah, the engineers at SAASST will continue to monitor the movement of the CubeSat continuously until it reaches its stable orbit. The team expects to receive and send more signals so that the health of all subsystems, especially the dual cameras and the XRD detector, can be checked.
